Ruled by the medieval Knights of St John for 270 years, sun-drenched Malta has an intensely warm-hearted culture. The honey-stoned capital, Valletta, fringes a spectacular Grand Harbour and bursts with stepped alleyways, bustling cafés and rich monuments. Today there's free time to admire its gems, perhaps wander the Upper Barracca Gardens or marvel at the sumptuous St John's Co-Cathedral, which houses Caravaggio's masterpiece, 'The Beheading of St John the Baptist'. DAY 4 : Palermo.

Originally a Carthaginian stronghold in the 5th Century BC, the Sicilian capital is set in a valley called the 'Golden Shell' and combines a modern bustling metropolis with a traditional old quarter. It has a good selection of fine architecture and some of Italy's best museums. Includes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5 : Civitavecchia (for Rome).

Today, don't miss an optional excursion to witness the glory that is Rome. Italy's capital overflows with Roman, Renaissance and Baroque treasures, making it a sightseer's dream. Witness the vast and glorious St Peter's Square, the majestic St Peter's Basilica and splendid Clemente's Basilica before enjoying a guided tour of the mighty Colosseum, where gladiators once fought for their lives, cheered on by 50,000 baying spectators. DAY 6 : Livorno (for Florence & Pisa).

On the western shores of Tuscany, 16th century Livorno is the gateway to two of Italy's most poetic cities - Pisa and Florence. Founded in 1577 by the Medici family, its photogenic centre is an easy walk from the port and features lovely canals, bridges and plazas fringed with chic cafés and shops. Nearby, Pisa is famed for its amazing Leaning Tower and magnificent cathedral while Florence, the capital of Renaissance art, is home to the magnificent Uffizi Gallery featuring works by Michelangelo and Da Vinci, the Piazza del Duomo, the statue-filled Piazza della Signoria and the fairytale Ponte Vecchio bridge. DAY 7 : Monte Carlo.

Glamour, the Grand Prix and the Grimaldis are indelibly linked with the famous principality of Monaco, whose heart is Monte Carlo. High on a rock promontory, this almost fairytale place is packed with sights. DAY 8 : Marseille.

France's second city, Marseille, has a 2,500-year trading history and strong maritime atmosphere, set as it is around its picturesque Vieux Port. See the Notre-Dame de la Garde hilltop basilica and drive the Corniche road for magnificent views over the bay. Alternatively, sample the city's signature bouillabaisse or tour the lovely towns and vineyards of surrounding Provence. Includes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9 : Palma.

Surrounded by the warm, azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and is renowned for its gorgeous beaches, secluded coves and vibrant, cheerful resorts. Palma, it's stylish capital, is home to a fascinating historic quarter with attractions such as the impressive Gothic cathedral, the Royal Palace of La Almudaina, the 14th century Bellver Castle, the Convent of St Francis and the Carthusian Monastery of Valldemosa. DAY 10 : Valencia.

Home of paella, vibrant Valencia is Spain's third city and boasts a chequered past of Roman and Moorish occupation. Fringed by golden beaches, its centre is a compelling blend of sunny plazas, Gothic churches, gardens and modern skyscrapers, all now flanked by the surreal new City of Arts and Science - a futuristic cultural complex comprising spectacular steel-and-glass museums and planetariums. Today, roam around the charming centre where narrow alleyways weave around the ornate Cathedral, a stunning Romanesque-Gothic-Baroque edifice said to be the resting place of the Holy Grail. Once inside, climb the coiling staircase of its octagonal tower to soak up the inspiring panoramas over the city below. Later, admire Valencia's main square, the Playa del Ayuntamiento, the fine Museo de Bellas Artes and the Torres de Serranos, part of the city's original 14th century gate.
